Travel Diary: Playa Del Carmen

Travel Diary: Playa Del Carmen

Playa Del CarmenAt the end of August I traveled to Mexico for the first time ever! I had such a great time and with fall quickly approaching, I’m going to miss the tropical sun. My boyfriend, Michael, and I stayed at Paradisus La Perla in Playa del Carmen (we got a great vacation package! – read here), a beautiful all-inclusive resort on the Riviera Maya. Check out the resort and the places we went on our stay!

Honestly, all I need is a great beach to consider it a good vacation but it really felt like I got the full package. With great service, food, and a nightly live band it was exactly the [short] break I needed from NYC!

Playa Del Carmen

Playa del Carmen, or Playa for short, has it’s own Fifth Ave – a few miles of shopping, eating, and nightlife. Michael and I went early in the afternoon for a stroll outside the hotel. We stopped at Ah Cocoa, a cafe that sells coffee and lots of chocolate. We opted for coffee for the energy to walk that hot day. I bought some nice knick knacks for my family while there, including some mezcal, tequila, and jewelry.

Xcaret

While I initially wanted to go to Chichen Itza, we decided to be slightly more adventurous and have some more action. Xcaret is a natural water “park” and museum just a 15 minute drive from our hotel. We swam an hour long river path which passed underneath dark bat caves (seriously..) and some pretty large fish. That was followed by snorkeling, a Mexican buffet lunch, then Mayan and nature exhibits. The night culminated with a 2 hour show sharing interpretive dances of Mexican history and traditional Mexican music and dance. I highly recommend going to this daily long trip if you have the time!

Now that I know I’ll be home for a while, I’m definitely planning for some more trips. Cuba 2017, anyone? 🙂
