It’s no secret that designer brands have an allure, and with that allure comes a hefty price tag. A quote my mom says all.the.time comes to mind: “Lo barato sale caro.” The direct translation in English is “cheap is expensive.” It’s an oxymoron which essentially means if you purchased something cheap now, you may be sacrificing long lasting quality and thus the purchase turns out to be pricier due to when you need to repurchase. Keeping that in mind, it sometimes makes sense to purchase designer clothing over fast fashion and dupes. I personally like to think of designer clothing and accessories as an investment that will last me many years. So, what are the investments?
The Classics
Classics like Diane von Furstenburg’s iconic wrap dresses are well worth the expense. Wrapped silhouettes are making a big comeback for good reason – they flatter literally every body. Think about those lasting styles that never go out of fashion, and are never just fads – you’ll wear them for years!
Leather, suede, and fur
It’s simple – quality. Designer goods in leather, suede, and/or fur will stand the test of time. Just make sure properly care for the material. Humidity can drastically destroy leather over time, and you don’t want to get suede or fur wet!
High resale value
Let’s be honest – fast fashion has changed how we shop, so we may not always want to keep our designer items after a while. Designer brands really hold their resale value, even when in used condition… up to 60% of the original price! This is a great way to earn back a portion of how much you paid.
Lastly, buying designer items is so much easier when it’s more affordable. The RealReal is an online, luxury consignment shop where you can shop and consigned pre-owned designer items! Sign up for The RealReal to get started!
