I have yet to take time to watch Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix, but my closet clean out has began as early as October 2018. Feeling uninspired, frustrated at the clothing that I kept in the hopes they would fit when I lost the weight (a year in and I have yet to lose the weight), and needing a style reboot totally inspired my wardrobe changes. With the start of the new year, I’ve decided that I need an ultimate purge. Much like Marie Kondo’s theory, I want to spark joy when looking at my closet.
Here’s a peek at the things I’m getting rid of:
The items that give me anxiety
It’s true- I have clothing that gives me anxiety. I realized this as I was getting dressed from time to time – I would look at myself, think I was cute, return to my mirror a few minutes later to find that the item was bunching in unflattering ways, causing me to sweat, or simply making me itchy. It would launch me into a small panic trying to figure out what to change into next. Overall, this includes body conscious mini dresses, ill-fitting non-stretch denim, and shorts.
Everything that simply doesn’t fit, even if I’m working to lose the weight
Last year, I found the cutest cropped brown leather jacket. I bought it online, believing it would fit (it didn’t). It’s been on the same hanger since. Peace out, too small jacket ✌🏻
Items with tags that I have yet to wear
Guilty as charged. I have bought, I haven’t worn. It happens to the best of us. I think the rule is that if something remains in your closet for 1 year without being worn it’s time to wish it bon voyage. Considering that many items aren’t exclusively seasonal, I’m going to chop this to 6 months. For the most part, most clothing can be worn year round with the right layering.
The items that simply aren’t “me” anymore
By far, this is my most subjective category. What isn’t “me” anymore? Sure a specific trend may be taking off but perhaps it was for me. Lately, I am loving oversized ‘90s workwear-inspired clothing, the strong shoulders of the ‘80s, and and ‘70s wide legs pants.
While I am sharing the things I am personally getting rid of, if those are items that you love and work for your body – work it! And as the old saying goes – one person’s trash is another’s treasure (that’s the whole concept of thrifting anyway!)
