Let’s talk bangs – last year in December I decided to go for the chop and quickly found that the new hairstyle required lots of time, patience, and a little bit of skill to nail it daily. After 5 months – much longer than I anticipated having the bangs! – I can crown myself a semi-pro at handling them.
First Step: Deciding your style
I was personally inspired by the hair of a few of my favorite influencers – Alyssa Coscarelli, Maria Bernad, Jenny Cipoletti (of Margo and Me), and Signe Nortoft (of MONOSIGNE). I fell in love with the very of-the-moment bob length and a vintage vibe the bangs add to the overall look. For me, I really wanted to go bold with a baby bang – hitting a little above the brow.
Whether you are going for a blunt baby bang, or a different kind of style do your research. You really want to have a portfolio of examples – I like to save any inspiration I come across on Instagram into my “Hair Inspo” collection – so that I can show my hair stylist for reference. You’ll also want to consider the amount of work you want to put into your hair on a daily basis. Regardless of the style, you’ll still have some added steps to your hair routine each day.
A few new steps in your daily routine
Get ready for a brand new hair routine! Bangs are not wake up, brush, and go… at least not for me. My bangs look best when I style them each day:
- Using a pintail comb, I separate my bangs from the rest of my hair, which gets pinned back.
- Without wetting the rest of my hair (use a spray bottle and spray close to the hair line), I wash my bangs with shampoo daily. That’s followed up by blowdrying the bangs straight forward.
- Depending on the day, that’s followed up by a quick swipe of a flatiron medium heat to make sure I don’t have flyaways.
Throughout the day, bangs can get a bit unruly – wind, humidity, breakthrough oil on my forehead can all get these hairs looking funky and a bit out of place. To keep them neat, I carry dry shampoo sheets (honestly the best way to have dry shampoo in a way you can transport them to work, or anywhere) and a small comb to brush them them back into place.
Get them cut regularly
People often don’t realize how quickly hair can grow until they get bangs. To keep my bangs at the length I want them, I should be going to my hair stylist every 2 weeks (though because I’m busy, I usually wait 3-4 weeks to get them trimmed). While some choose to trim their own bangs at home, I could never nail it and would prefer to leave it up to a pro.
