It’s no secret I thrift- after all, it is in part the reason I named my blog as such. I started thrifting about 4 years ago, so I’m still relatively new to this kind of shopping but I got hooked immediately. When I found a Marc Jacobs dress and Rag and Bone jeans with tags each at less than $50, I knew my shopping was forever changed.
The Find
This is the core of thrifting. My tip is to go with an open mind and browse, or have a loose objective (ex: “I need a dress”). You don’t want to restrict yourself when it comes to thrift shopping. Unlike typical retail stores, you can’t anticipate what will be in store in advance but you can set goals as that what you need to find. Something I always do at thrift stores is try on before buying, and finding out the return policy. Some places have great return policies whereas some are more restrictive (either nonexistent or less than 10 days for a full refund). You really want to be sure you love the items before swiping your credit card!
Affordable
Like I mentioned before, designer at affordable prices are definitely a major perk of thrifting but you can also apply this to fast fashion brands like Zara, Mango, Topshop, and others. Case in point: I found this cute romper by Mango (with tags!) for less than $20. A word of caution: set up some kind of budget you want to adhere to. I sometimes get carried away and have to start eliminating items when I get to the register. Avoid this by budgeting in advance. So long as there isn’t a line, I like to do this while I’m in the fitting room and trying on clothing.
Sustainable
I like the idea that the way I shop is bigger than just me spending money. I’ve always tried to implement sustainable practices when it comes to giving away my old clothing, like donating or reselling. On the flip side, thrift shopping helps me maintain the recyclability of clothing. Sure, I love finding pristine items as bargain prices but gently used items are also great to have! It gives clothing a second (or third) change at extending its wear as opposed to just throwing it in the garbage.
As far as my go-to places, Buffalo Exchange and Beacon’s Closet are at the top of my list. I hardly ever leave empty handed, and I love digging through the racks for that special find. You can also check out Goodwill, which I find has even more affordable finds! Know if any good thrift stores in NYC I should check out? Let me know below!
