If you follow me on Instagram you may have seen a recent post where I uncovered my ancestry results in partnership with Helix. The DNA Discovery Kit not only provides ancestry results, but also provides information that can be crucial to your health based on your specific DNA! Since I’ve embarked on a fitness journey this month, I wanted to see what my DNA would share about how to workout, what to eat, and what to avoid.
Choosing Power over Endurance
This is an interesting discovery because it demonstrates what types of workouts work best based on the types of muscle fibers. Apparently, I am more likely to have fast twitch muscles that help them contract with lots of power movements. This means I’m better off focusing on strength workouts. It’s no wonder I’m not a marathoner! Running is not my forte, though I do enjoy other types of endurance workouts like spinning. I also enjoy yoga, but tend to lean on power yoga which plays on both power and endurance. This month, I’ve been focusing on my twice weekly personal training sessions that includes lots of weight training. I’m honestly surprised I can get through some of the workouts!
Less Caffeine Please
I’m actually not surprised by this. Although I absolutely love coffee, I have found that I am pretty sensitive to caffeine, especially if I drink it in the afternoon or at night. All I really need is my shot of espresso, no sugar added, in the morning to fuel my morning. While I may cheat on this from time to time when I need an afternoon boost, I’m always cautious to keep my caffeine intake at bay.
High Fat is a No-No
Since my DNA did not show a predisposition found in the Inuit of Greenland, I really should stray away from a high-fat diet. Luckily, this doesn’t mean completing laying off butter, cheese, or even nut butters but it is interesting when I’m considering my daily meals. Perhaps I can sub a “fatty” food for something else, like lean, vegetarian sources of protein.
I find intel from DNA discovery kits to be so interesting! I tried Helix, which let’s you continue discovering after the initial sequencing is done. Since they have your DNA, by adding new products you can learn more about not only your ancestry but health and wellness.
Sure, these results aren’t groundbreaking or the be-all end-all but it can assist in whatever your fitness journey is. I feel that it’s good to know these things while still maintaining a healthy diet and continuous workout plan.
Just getting started? Order your Helix kit with the Lose It! + embodyDNA feature for just $59.99 (discounted from $89.99)!
