NYC spring reminds me of Carrie Bradshaw, circa season 5, when she visits the Guggenheim on a seemingly beautiful day, then gets hit with wind that blows up her skirt, followed by a torrential downpour without notice. Take it from this New Yorker – the facts of that scene are very real, and makes for difficult spring outfitting. To meet the demands of dressing for multiple seasons in a single day, I think I may have nailed the formula. Here’s my idea of a typical NYC spring outfit that will cover your bases:
Mix light fabrics with chunky knits
I broke out my slip skirt that I bought last summer – a slinky, ankle length skirt that can only be worn with something extra warm up top. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the warm weather skirt with a chunky knit sweater fit for winter.
Wear brights
I’ve been willing warmer weather through my wardrobe – dialing back the coats and increasing the color. I went highlighter bright in my quest for mid-60+ degree weather.
Go for my go-to: Mules & Slingbacks
I don’t know a more transitional shoe than a mule or slingback. With toes covered you can still get away with these shoes during the chilly mornings and evenings, and still be appropriately dressed for the disproportionally warm afternoons.
…And when in doubt, make sure to carry your umbrella with you at all times!
